Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiffs Claim Blood Thinner Advertisements Are Misleading

BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on recent advertisements for blood thinning drug Xarelto, manufacturered by Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, (a division of Johnson & Johnson). Although the anticoagulant is the subject of over 2,800 lawsuits in federal court multidistrict litigation, these advertisements seem as prevalent and persistent as ever.

Recent ads feature the endorsements of popular celebrities, including Brian Vickers (a popular NASCAR driver), Kevin Nealon (an SNL alumni), Chris Bosh (a popular NBA player), and Arnold Palmer (a golf legend). During the commercials, each celebrity discusses their experiences with the blood thinner, which, of course, are all positive. Among the topics discussed by the celebrities, are Xarelto’s effectiveness at reducing the risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolism, strokes, and deep vein thrombosis.

Plaintiffs involved in the continuously growing number of lawsuits, however, have a very different perspective. They are focused on the significant dangers of uncontrollable bleeding they associate with the drug, specifically internal bleeds, as well as the drug’s lack of antidote, which can cause even a minor bleeding injury to become potentially fatal.

Xarelto’s lack of antidote means that if someone using the drug begins to bleed, doctors will be unable to clot their blood and stop that bleed. In these instances, doctors must resort to extreme, life-saving medical treatments such as blood transfusions or surgery to stop pooling blood.

Traditional blood thinners, such as warfarin, do not have the same issue as they do, in fact, they offer an antidote for consumers. When individuals using traditional blood thinners begin to bleed, physicians can treat them with vitamin K, which will counter the effects of the drug and allow the patient’s blood to clot.

Because of its sensitivity to vitamin K, warfarin requires that users follow a specific diet. In Xarelto advertisements, the celebrities note this fact as a drawback. They neglect to mention why it requires a special diet, however, which is due to the fact that the drug offers an antidote; a potentially life-saving characteristic.

The 2,800 Xarelto lawsuits reportedly now involved in MDL number 2592 are being overseen in the Eastern District of Louisiana by the Honorable Judge Eldon Fallon. As the cases await trial, others will be able to join them, which is why Attorney Joseph Osborne is currently working to ensure that everyone negatively affected by the drug will have the opportunity to investigate their legal rights. Attorney Osborne is offering free Xarelto consultations at this time.
